2010 Maria Yeung Research Awards

Congratulations to Shivani Ruparel, Post-Doctoral fellow in the Department of Endodontics and this year's recipient of the Maria Yeung Post-Doctoral Research Award.

This Award is given in memory of Dr. Yeung, a beloved member of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry. It is awarded for excellence in dental research. The winners are presented with a glass award and a cash prize.

2009 CSB Barbara Bowman Award

Congratulations to Nikita Ruparel, DDS/PhD Student with the Department of Endodontics, this year's recipient of the Barbara H. Bowman Graduate Student of the Year Award. This award recognizes her outstanding contributions to scientific literature with her 2008 publication entitled, "Homologous and Heterologous Desensitization of Capsaicin and Mustard Oil Responses Utilize Different Cellular Pathways in Nociceptors." Ms. Ruparel is mentored by Dr. Kenneth M. Hargreaves, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Endodontics. The plaque is presented by the Cellular and Structural Biology Department along with a cash award.

Five residents presented Oral Abstracts or Table Clinics at the 2009 AAE Annual Session in Orlando, FL

UT San Antonio Hosts Quad School Meeting

Thirty-five endodontic residents from Baylor, Louisiana State University, the University of Texas at Houston, the University of Texas at San Antonio and Wilford Hall attended the Quad Schools Meeting in San Antonio, TX on February 27 and 28, 2009. The Quad Schools meeting is an annual gathering of the four graduate programs and has recently included the Keesler and Wilford Hall Air Force Programs, both of which are affiliated with the LSU and UT San Antonio Programs, respectively. The four programs rotate the hosting of this meeting.

This year’s program included lectures from Dr. Bill Schindler – Roadmap to Diplomate Status and The Open Apex Tooth – Apexogenesis to MTA Barriers, Dr. Ken Hargreaves – Regenerative Endodontics, Dr. Bruno Azevedo – CBCT and Endodontics, Dr. Gary Carr – Designing and Equipping the Modern Endodontic Office / Ergonomics, Dr. John Schoeffel – Endodontic Irrigation with the EndoVac System, Dr. Parvin Dinyarian – Practice Management, and Dr. Karl Keiser – Cellular and Molecular Aspects of Tooth Root Resorption.

40 Years of Service

Glenn R. Walters, DDS., Associate Professor in the Department of Endodontics (left) celebrated 40 years of service with The University of Texas Health Science Center. When he was hired, Dr. Walters was solely responsible for the entire endodontic curriculum, and during the early years at the Dental School, he was the acting chairman of the department. &quote;I remember fondly that I presented the first endodontic lecture given here, and there were 14 sophomore and 16 freshman students," Dr. Walters said. At that time, the Dental School was located in the basement beneath the Medical School auditorium.

Through the years, he has enjoyed his service at the Health Science Center. "I realize that being able to be a part of a "new" dental school is a unique opportunity to influence the professional education of dentists," he said. "I have tremendous respect for dental students and my dental faculty colleagues."

Dr. Walters is looking forward to teaching for years to come. "I have no plans or desire to retire as long as I continue to enjoy teaching and feel that I can be a contributing member of the Department of Endodontics and the Dental School," he said.

During the Employee Service Award Ceremony held February 24, 2009, Interim President William L. Henrich, MD, MACP (right) presented Dr. Walters with a crystal bowl.
