Periodontics
Specialty Services - Periodontist

Periodontics The Section of Periodontics has a wide range of activities covering all aspects of periodontics, bone regeneration and surgical implant procedures.

Research is a core activity of the section with many contributions that have developed new surgical techniques for bone regeneration around teeth, alveolar bone and dental implants. As well as this, there are ongoing research projects focused on the role of bacterial adhesion in the development of periodontal disease and studies in the genetic and molecular basis for periodontal regeneration.

Finally the section is responsible for thePeriodontics Information Center, which is an internet site that provides related information to dentists around the world. This site was made possible by contributions from Bud and Linda Tarrson.

Teaching Programs

The educational programs in Periodontics are extensive with courses for dental students, residents, international preceptors and practicing dentists throughout the world.

Predoctoral Education in Periodontics for Dental Students
This program provides lectures, seminars, preclinical laboratory experiences and clinical teaching throughout the four year dental curriculum. Students are exposed to a wide range of patients with periodontal problems and all students get extensive clinical experience in non surgical and surgical periodontal procedures.

Postgraduate Residency Program in Periodontics
The goal of the Periodontics residency program is to provide advanced education in periodontology to highly qualified graduate dentists who are interested in a career or specialized practice, teaching and research. The program requires a minimum of three (3) academic years for completion (full-time enrollment). The candidate is awarded a certificate upon completion. A high level of advanced clinical skills and completion of a curriculum broadly representative of basic and applied science is required. Original research and a thesis in any of a number of related fields is required and may be undertaken on problems relevant to periodontics. The principles of scientific research design and evaluation are emphasized.

The program devotes a considerable portion of time, to advanced basic science courses specially organized to serve as a prerequisite to the thorough understanding of the clinical problems in Periodontics. In the clinical area the student is exposed to different therapeutic philosophies through independent study, demonstrations, and practice. Modifications of the basic program are made to suit individual objectives and to meet the need of individual trainee to follow an independent program to study.

Periodontics Preceptorship Program
The goal of the Periodontic Preceptorship Program is to provide an advanced education in Periodontics for an improved understanding of periodontal diseases and increased skills in its management.

A series of seminars and lecture courses are available each quarter. The student can discuss with the program director his/her interest and needs and an effort will be made to tailor the program to meet such needs.

Clinical practice is limited to observation and assistance at pre surgical and surgical procedures. Those interested in research will be able to collaborate in some of the ongoing research projects in the Section of Periodontics. There is a tuition fee charged for each quarter.

Research Activities

There are several areas of periodontal research. One area of research is the development of new surgical techniques to regenerate periodontal tissues around diseased teeth and implants. Another area of focus has been the role of bacteria and the patient's immune system on periodontal disease. Basic molecular biological approaches to cellular regeneration are also part of our activities. Finally, there has a been a great interest in research to understand the observed association between periodontal infection and systemic health problems such as diabetes, heart and lung diseases, stroke and low-birth-weight premature births.

Patient Care

Our patient care responsibilities include supervising periodontal services provided by dental students, resident dentists and a practice where our faculty provide state of the art clinical care in a private practice setting involving periodontal surgery, implant surgery and nonsurgical management of periodontal disease.
